This star magnolia grows just outside my back door, and every spring it stops me in my tracks. I wanted to paint it the way I actually see it: one flower, fully held, set apart from everything else, quietly majestic rather than showy.
Magnolias carry old symbolism around nobility, dignity, and endurance, and the star magnolia in particular is often linked to purity and a love of nature, blooming early and boldly, ahead of the season. This piece leans into that: a single bloom given space to simply be, nothing around it competing for attention, emerging out of a dark circle.
